Zyban (Bupropion HCL) is the only Non-nicotine medication shown to be effective (19% abst. at 6 mos). It works on both craving and withdrawal pathways in the brain. This means that for many people, the desire to smoke decreases, and the intensity of withdrawal symptoms after quitting also decreases. Zyban can be used with Nicotine Replacement Therapy, such as the Patch or Gum. The course of treatment for Zyban is 8 to 12 weeks, but currently trials are being conducted to assess longer treatment plans. The smoker can begin ONE WEEK before their Cold Turkey Quit Date. Many physicians prescribe Wellbutrin instead: It is the SAME Drug, and should be used same way -- with behavioral components. Zyban has shown 36% Abstinence at 1 month, and 19% Abstinence at 6 months. For more information about Zyban, click HERE.
