Some clear temporal events had a huge impact on the prevalence of smoking over the past century. Notice how World War II saw a sharp rise in smoking rates -- this is partly due to the fact that soldiers were rationed cigarettes along with other supplies. Also, marketing became big business. In 1964, the Surgeon General's report about the health effects of smoking was released. This, along with agressive tobacco control efforts, began to have an effect on the prevalence of smoking. Notice that tax increases had an impact as well.
