17 women were recruited as Healthy Heart Advisors, 7 from Orchard Park and 10 from MLK Towers. They ranged in age from 29-70. The risk factors of the HHAs mirrored those found in the community. Greater than half of the HHAs were smokers; greater than two-thirds were overweight; greater than one-half were obese; greater than one-half were hypertensive; two of the older women had experienced an MI.
Smoking cessation classes were held for the HHAs and their neighbors. Almost all of the women had found part time work by the end of the intervention.
