Shoes

It is important to invest in a good pair of shoes that properly fit your feet. The name brand does not matter as different brands are made to fit different feet. It is advisable to go to a walking/running store to purchase shoes as you are more likely to encounter a knowledgeable salesperson that can help find the best shoe for you and can fit you correctly. Not selecting the proper shoe can lead to blisters, injuries, and uncomfortable runs!

The shoe that you select should take into consideration your arch type (low, medium, or high), running mechanics (under-pronator, neutral, over-pronator), weight, type of running surface, and weekly mileage. Sometimes insoles or orthotics may help you get the right fit in correcting your running mechanics or arches.

Here are some tips for when you go store:

  • Bring your old running or athletic shoes. Your salesperson can check the wear on your old shoes to determine your running/walking mechanics.
  • Wear the same socks you usually wear when running or walking.
  • Get both feet measured. One may be larger that the other, which then you should try on the pair that fits your larger foot.
  • The wiggle room between your longest toe and the end of the shoe should be at least ½ inch.
  • Be sure the shoe is wide enough. You should have a comfortable fit through the midfoot.
  • The heel should not slip as you run.
  • Run around the store in the shoes before you buy them. They should feel comfortable right away. Don’t expect to break them in.

Make sure you replace worn out shoes. Shoes tend to lose their shock absorption after 300-500 miles. You can look at your outsole, and if it is worn enough, it’s time to buy a new pair of shoes. This prevents injury since when shoes wear out, they may not be providing you with enough shock absorption or support.
